Sight words, often also called high frequency sight words, are commonly used words that children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode. When young readers memorize sight words, they advance in confidence and fluency.
These are the words like ‘cherish’, ‘reject’, ‘severe’, ‘utter’ and so on. Although, they are usually small, and easily recognized, the spelling of these words is not always straightforward in regard to how they sound. As students work through their fourth grade year they continue to practice reading and writing. You can help them do that with this grade four sight word list.
